Dan's Teaching Philosophy
" You don’t need perfect grammar to start — you just need the courage to try. "
Helping English learners speak with confidence through real conversations.
Many students study English for years, but they still feel afraid to speak.
This is often because they learn too much grammar and not enough communication.
Grammar is important, but it should help students speak — not stop them.
When students focus on meaning instead of mistakes, they feel more relaxed.
They speak more naturally, and their English improves faster.
Mistakes are part of learning.
Confidence comes first. Accuracy comes later.

Dan Brown - Conversation-focused English teacher
Hello and welcome 👋
My name is Dan Brown, and I’m a native English speaker from Toronto, Canada.
I’m a certified TEFL teacher, trained at SEE TEFL in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with many years of experience teaching English across Asia — primarily in
Thailand and Vietnam.
I’ve taught English in a wide range of settings, including kindergartens, language center, private high schools, trade colleges, and universities. I’ve also worked extensively with professional adults, university students, and older teenagers, both in classrooms and online.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I spent over two years teaching
online conversational English via Zoom, often free of charge. Instead of payment, I asked students to pay kindness forward — by helping someone else, donating to local charities, or exchanging language skills.
That experience shaped how I view education:
English should be accessible, human, and practical — not transactional.
I currently live in Thailand and previously spent more than
three years living and working in Vietnam. I love travelling, meeting local people, and learning about different cultures —and I bring that cultural awareness directly into my lessons.

Work & Teaching Experience
Before becoming an English teacher, I spent 34 years in municipal and provincial business environments. This background gives me strong communication, leadership, and real-world problem-solving skills — which are especially valuable for students who need English for work, interviews, presentations, and everyday professional communication.
In Vietnam, I worked for multiple language centres, kindergartens, a private Vietnamese high school, and an international English education company. I taught IELTS classes, general English, and conversational English — both in person and online. Over the years, I’ve taught hundreds of students, from age three to working professionals — including Asian English teachers looking to improve their fluency and confidence. Through these experiences, I saw a common problem: many learners study English for years but still struggle with natural, confident conversation. That’s why I created this website.
Conversational English with Dan is a free, community-focused platform designed to help learners speak English more naturally, confidently, and clearly — without pressure, embarrassment, or unnecessary complexity. This project is built on experience, empathy, and real communication — and it continues to grow with feedback and ideas from learners like you.

Teaching Across Cultures, Volunteering & Community Learning
In my first photo above, I am standing with a monk from Myanmar at a university in Surin, Thailand. Here I was volunteering at a university in Buriram, Thailand, teaching English to monks and students together. These classes focused on discussion, listening, and shared experiences. Volunteering reinforced my belief that learning works best in a supportive, pressure-free environment. Teaching in multicultural classrooms taught me that English is a bridge, not a test. My focus is always on helping students communicate clearly and naturally.

IELTS with Real Conversation
This photo shows an IELTS class I taught at a Vietnamese high school. While exams are important, real communication skills matter just as much. By combining IELTS preparation with conversation practice, students build confidence and accuracy simultaneously.

Building Confidence from a Young Age
This was my Grade 10 class at a private school in Vietnam. Many teenagers understand English well but hesitate to speak. My classroom encourages participation, humor, and trust. When students feel comfortable, they speak more — and their English improves naturally.
